Alternative Spaces Proposal - AENJ Conference w/Zimmerli Tour

AENJ & The Zimmerli

"Art Educators of New Jersey was conceived in 1939 by art educators interested in the promotion of visual arts education in the state. It is [their] purpose to promote and maintain the highest possible degree of quality instruction in visual arts programs throughout New Jersey."

"[Their] annual Conference, features over 150 Workshops, Trade show, Panels and Guest speakers including internationally known artists.  [They] also offer other professional development opportunities that focus on areas of interest to art educators." This is an alternative art space because it is more similar to an seminar setting. The conference exhibits student works on fair-like fences rather than the traditional wall space. The conference is hosted at the Hyatt Hotel, with dozens of rooms to exhibit the 150 workshops featuring techniques of all kinds, past projects, or hosting a discussion on issues related to art and the classroom setting.

AENJ's conference this year is Thursday October 3rd, Friday October 4th and Saturday October 5th at The Hyatt in New Brunswick.  This is located 5 minutes away from Rutger's Zimmerli Museum. The Jane Vorhees Zimmerli Art Museum is more of a traditional art space. The Zimmerli "collects, preserves, researches, and exhibits world-class works of art to provide the university community and diverse regional, national, and international audiences with direct experience of the visual arts. Scholarly activities make art intellectually accessible through exhibitions, publications, and educational programs."

I am currently working on an educational program as part of my Professional Practice course. This program is visitor packet aimed at 8th grade art and english classes including the following: A letter to the classroom teacher inviting them to the Zimmerli to take part in the attached tour, a pre-visit and post-visit activity, a summative grid of the tour, a unit plan outlining the specific relative information within the tour, an activity worksheet for the students, and a survey for the teacher to share their experience at the museum and with the tour.

I am presenting my tour, A Walk Through Someone Else's Shoes, on May 13, when it will be reviewed for selection. I would like to propose this tour for AENJ's annual conference. I believe this would be a dynamic integration of the alternative art space, the conference, with the traditional art space, the Zimmerli. The proposed tour would make the art at the Zimmerli more accessible to visitors in the community, and the conference brings a large amount of art educators in to the community. I would also be giving the tour, therefore exercising my knowledge of the works, and guiding a large group of visitors through the whole museum.

The deadline for proposal submissions is May 15. All submissions are made through the web (http://www.aenj.org/pages/conference). This proposal is also a requirement for the AENJ scholarship that I applied for. I am in the process of thoroughly reviewing my submission with my Profession Practice professor and art education advisor.

Post 2 Redo: Index Art Center & Jersey City Art School

So, I have been researching these two galleries space for my final project. The reason why I'm currently researching them is that our project need a space and a set time. While I was researching, I had to build a good proposal that would catch their eyes, which can be seen in my previous update post. I would contact them through email with the proposal attached to them. In the content, I describe what kind of show it is in brief short paragraph and add certain important details like how long to install, how much pieces and artists, and how long is the show going to be up for. Important details like before helps create a stronger trust and confidences between the person who's sending out the email to the person who's receiving the email, which you can see it from below.

Hello,

I would like to propose a exhibition project that my partner, Rebecca, and I have been working on for a while. I've been told by Michelle Mumoli and Doris Caçoilo to speak with you about the availability of your gallery. We already starting to acquire couple of pieces from 12 different artists. But, we just need a secure location and a great space to show these amazing artworks.

Our exhibition is called "REvulsion". It's a collection of different works that explores the ideas about beauty and body images when there are all of these advances in technology, body modifications, and cosmetics. These works exposes the negativity of body reconstruction and the perceptions of the human body. Overall, these works can appear quite grotesque but a great conversational kick-starter.

I would like to know if you have any availability in June or July for this exhibition. The show duration period will be from 2-3 weeks. I am very flexible with the date and the show duration. The installation would take about 2-3 days, because we do have a lot of works including couple interesting sculpture pieces. And, deinstallation would take 2 days or less. I have a lot of experiences in installing/deinstalling work at New Jersey City University as one of the senior gallery assistant, an intern for _gaia studios, and many more.

I also attached a proposal with couple of images to give you an idea about our show.

If you have any questions, feel free to call or email me back. My number is down below.

Thank you for your time,

Panida Suwannawisut (Panda)

Proposal Redux

Proposal #1

"Death of Art" show

Last fall I created a series of images involving Campbell's soup cans. I was influenced by Arthur Danto's criticism on Andy Warhol stating that the Brillo Box, which was a ready-made object that Andy presented as art, was the Death of Art that art had stopped there and nothing interesting would follow. Playing with this idea I created a visual to want Danto said, by using the style Andy did of appropriation and the ready-made, I photographed Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup cans in a still life studio set-up. I took one image with one can intact, the second the can was smashed and the last image I buried in dirt.

I think this project will fit in an alternative gallery space, since I'm researching this idea and exploring its  potential for artists that show in them (beneficial or death of their career).  With a place like E.TittleMouse&Co. the space is also a thrift store so they acquire and resell trends, fads and fashions that have died and are bringing it to a new generation.

Recess Art in SoHo and Proposal to Recess Art

Recently while searching online for alternative art spaces that accept proposals from artists I found an interesting art space that allows artists to have a work place as well as show their work.

Recess is located at 41 Grand street, Ground Floor, New York, NY, 10013 and allows for artists to work at the same time as they interact with the audience at the same time. Artists are given this opportunity through what they refer to as Sessions. Sessions are similar to artist in residency programs, but instead of a typical artist in residency in which the audience is only involved at the end, during the exhibition, they are involved through out the entire process.

Hosting 10-12 sessions a season from August to August. Each session lasts for about 2 months with 6 artists taking part in a session at a time. Sessions as mentioned above requires the artist to work as well as exhibit. How this is done is up to the artists themselves for some choose to consider their work on exhibit as it is being worked on while some divide their time at Recess into a working stage and an exhibition.

Artists interested in taking part in a session at Recess must fill out an application; applications are accepted in Mid-March. Each application must be accompanied by numerous materials such as artist statement, resume, proposed budget, project proposal, work samples, and descriptions of work.

In mid-March of 2014 I will be applying for a session at Recess. While at Recess I plan to expand on two series I am currently working on about domesticity and male domesticity. As part of this expansion of these series I will be working on two separate pieces that will come together as a whole with the two current series.

These two pieces will be a video project and a series of prints both based around the idea of 1950s tea parties. The video project will record the interactions amongst the audience and myself around a table that is designed to look like it was transported to the present day via time machine from the 1950s. Audience members will be invited to walk around as well as sit at the table and interact with one another while enjoying a mid-afternoon snack. The prints will be a continuation of a series I am working on about male domesticity called “Not Your Average Housewife”, which depicts males in domestic situations that your “typical” housewife would be in while they don the persona of housewife through the use of a pair of high heels. This particular series of prints that I will work on while my time at Recess will be about the same topic, but focus specifically on males in the situation of attending a tea party.

Currently, still in the planning stages this proposal is just an overview of what I plan to propose to Recess in March of 2014.

Revision on the Exhibition Project Update

So, this is the current update to our exhibition/curatorial proposal. First of all, the name is now change to "REvulsion" because it's easier to remember and gives a better understanding about the show. Second, the proposal gone threw some changes. This is going to be sent out to different galleries, especially Jersey City Arts School and Index Gallery.

"REvulsion" Exhibition Proposal

Curatorial Statement

In the 21st century, people have their own ideas about how they want and try to look like, and realizations of how they actually look. With new advances in technology, the hope for a new physical appearances can become reality: from a tattoo process, changing eye color, to intensive cosmetic surgury, and/or body modification. This controversial issue affects us, our ideas about "beauty" and "human," and often surface in contemporary art issues. The "REvulsion" exhibition explores the the negatives of body reconstruction, as well the new "norm" on ways we perceive people's body image.

"REvulsion" is curated by Panida Suwannawisut and Rebecca Smith. The focus is on artworks and designs from different art mediums which concentrate on conflicting body images, controversial body issues, and perceptions of the human body from an everyday viewer. Some curiosities, like mutant creatures, fantasy characters, cross dressers, distortion of the form, and prosthetic 'body architects' will be the exhibition highlights.

We plan to revise and re-stage the exhibition annually. Our focus will continuously change every year due to different approaches.

Update on "Renewal and Revulsion" -by Panida and Rebecca

Proposal

With new advances in technology, the hope for a new physical appearances can become reality: from a tattoo process, changing eye color, to intensive cosmetic surgery, and/or body modification. This controversial issue affects us, our ideas about “beauty” and “human,” and often surface in contemporary art issues. The “Renewal vs. Revulsion” exhibition explores positives/negatives of body reconstruction, as well the new “norm” on ways we perceive people’s body image.

Renewal vs. Revulsion will be curated by Panida Suwannawisut and Rebecca Smith. Our focus will be on artworks and designs from different art mediums which concentrate on conflicting body images, controversial body issues, and perceptions of the human body from an everyday viewer. Some curiosities, like mutant creatures, fantasy characters, cross dressers, distortion of the form, and prosthetic ‘body architects’ will be exhibition highlights. Renewal vs. Revulsion will not be shown in only one space, but as a traveling show with different ‘pop-up’ locations (preferably starting location at _gaia studio gallery or NYFA Event Space).

We plan to create a short web-series that includes behind-the-scene shots of different conversations with random people we pose questions to and artists we will eventually meet. Our aim is to provoke and inspire a viewer’s love for their own skin and embrace changes of time and technology.

We will compile the remainder of photographs, interview footage, and artwork in a small catalog representing all the work that goes into the show, plus a behind-the-scenes peek at the exhibition’s curating process.

Our target time span for forming the exhibition is from now to May 10th, 2013. We plan to revise and re-stage the exhibition annually.  Our focus will continuously change every year due to different approaches. We expect to send out ‘artist-calls’ to professional artists, student artists, and amateurs as soon as possible.

We are seeking artwork that not exceed 60”x60”. Media art and video installation is welcomed. Sculptures cannot be any taller than 60”. Submission deadline is on May 3rd or until the space is filled.

Alternative Exhibition Space: Art in General/Proposal revamp

Art in General is an alternative exhibition space. It is non-profit organization that is concerned with the making and the displaying of new work for the artists . This space is in constant flux depending on the artists, the needs of the artists for their work  The interesting thing about this space is that they are concerned with the public and who will be viewing the work. This space was founded in 1981. It was based in an old building that was ode owned or used by the General Hardware. The founders and owners of the space , Martin Weinstein and Teresa Liszka, and they wanted to be able to exhibit what they called "unconventional work and exchange ideas with their peers".
This space includes a six-floor floor plan.  It is located in New York City, is approximately 2,000 square feet and is in three neighborhoods of Tribeca, SoHo, and Chinatown. The found floor space and the 6th floor are gallery spaces. They even have for the artists an availability for the event to include up to 350 people.  There is also an availability to have the public entrance from Tuesday through Saturday 12pm-6pm.

The fees for an 8-hour day: for corporate causes it is $2000, and non-profit is for 1,000. The contact information is through their phone number 212.29.0473. Also you can take a tour by appointment and there is a space rental agreement.

My proposal for this gallery space would be to have  the organization Creative Growth in Oakland, California come and show work in New York . This organization has been really great at exposing people to what individuals with disabilities are capable of as artists and art makers and by sponsoring them it has given them financial stability to keep their studio open.

The exhibition will be on the 6th floor with the pieces and the ground floor will be where we will have donations, merchandise, and also will have prints for sale of the work. We will even have the artists there as well. This will only be for the opening night and will run for one weeks time. The work will include the pieces provided by the artists. There will be no more than 80 pieces depending on the sizes of the pieces and the wall space. The gallery space will also show video interviews and show the artist while they are making the work as well.

Proposal:

I am proposing to do an exhibition featuring children with disabilities. I am a student at New Jersey City University and for my final project for Gallery Management class I want to put on an exhibition about something I am very passionate about. I am working to become a teacher of children with disabilities and without ages three through eight. My other concentration is art, more specifically painting. As a student and in my life I have always been very passionate and excited to work in the art world and to also reach out to those with disabilities. To create an exhibit that includes both would really help the art world to open up to a new community. As others have done before, such as Creative Growth art studio out in Oakland, California , is to open up an art studio for people with disabilities a variety of these disabilities. This will give people the recognition and the exposure and will further demonstrate the children's skills that even though they may be disabled in one sense, they are still able to create meaningful and beautiful art. Art can be accessible to those people who are not always seen as having the recognition for it.

I propose to utilize the space in your building , Art in General. This space would provide the space and venue to explore this interaction between art and those with disabilities. This exhibition will open up the world to these individuals and their artwork. I will be teaming up with A. Harry Moore Grammar School from Jersey City, New Jersey. The children who attend this school will provide the work. There will be no more than fifty works displayed depending on the size of the pieces that will fit in the space.

The ground floor will also include where there will be prints of the work, sales of the art that is on display on the sixth floor. Also on the ground floor will be sales of merchandise such as tee shirts made up for the event featuring a few selected art works on them. Those will be helping out with the show will be people who are employed at the school, A. Harry Moore. They will be able to give the public a better understanding of who these children are who made the work. The show will include a short bio of the child including the piece or pieces included in an affordable catalog for the event if there is time as well.

The opening will be on the first Friday night of the exhibition. I am looking to have this show open in the month of July and it will run for two weeks. There will be students who are involved in making the work there as well. The best part about this space is it will be seen as exhibiting work that is different from other spaces and it will be for a good cause. The more that we can give these individuals a voice the better people will understand them and the art world will be further exposed to new possibilities in the population who is making art.

Alternative Gallery Part 1: Baang + Burne Contemporary

They open a temporary space and pop-up locations to hold unique events and dinner parties. For instances, I have worked with them on their previous exhibition called “6x6” exhibit. In 6 weeks, there were two artists shown every week. As a special occasion, they created a private dinner each week with the two featuring artists. They pull together these two sides of the art community and force this conversation about art.

I choose this organization because I personally have work with them as well believe in their causes. Baang + Burne Contemporary is an unconventional art gallery with the spirit of a traveling indie band, which is founded by two strong women; Charlie Grosso and Kesha Bruce. Unlike a typical chelsea gallery with their typical chelsea gallery girls, they like to invent new ways to build a bond with the artists and the art lovers that comes daily to see new art. "Baang and Burne Contemporary aims to challenge the premise of what an art gallery is. We want to engage the world at large and present work that generates dialogue critically, socially, and culturally.”
