NEWARK MUSEUM 2/15 and MoMA 2/22

NEWARK MUSEUM Friday 2/15: Pat Wessel will be meeting you for the tour at 11:40am in the entrance lobby of the museum. I will not be joining you as I am out of town. The tour is $9 per person. Parking in the museum lot is $6-$7 per car. After the tour please stay on in the museum and see as many galleries as you can. Especially concentrating on the mid-century and contemporary galleries. Be sure to see the exhibition "Women Behind the Lens" and the contemporary African American galleries (Ms. Wessel might be taking you to see these.) Explore the museum as much as possible while considering the questions. Feel free to ask Ms. Wessel some of these questions too.

Please answer:
What is the role of the museum?
Who is the audience of the institution?
Does the institution think about the community? collector? artist? history?
What is the purpose of collection?
Why exhibition?
Is labeling important? Why or why not?
Who are the artists being exhibited? Why?
What considerations should be taken in selection?
What is the role of the curator?
How are exhibitions put together?
What are the elements of a successful exhibition?
Why multiple exhibitions? What are they?
How is all of this funded?
Who helps run the institution and how?
How can this be sustained?

MoMA Friday 2/22: We will meet our host Steven Wheeler just inside the main entrance doors at 11:45am. Please be ontime! Be sure I have your phone number before this date.

Today I had my second portrait shoot for an artist or musician. Avi Fox-Rosen a great musician, composer and producer came to my studio today in Jersey City for a shoot. Our goal was to get a great shot for his new CD coming out this month. He wanted something different, a bit out there and I was glad to take on the challenge. Having all the lighting equipment that I need in my studio we had a great time while also getting some great shots. Here is my favorite along with another portrait shoot with Mollie Thonneson.

Art on the Ceiling

I chose this particular article because it really shows how you can exhibit your art just about anywhere. You don't need the typical gallery for your works to be seen. This article is about the artist Miquel Barceló who was able to create a sculpture on the ceiling of a Government building.

The Little Things that Make Me Who I Am

Hey everybody! My name is Shana, I am 20 years old and this is my first semester here at NJCU. I’m here to get my B.A. in ceramics and Art teacher certification.

Ever since I was little I was ALWAYS outside taking in nature (aka playing in the mud) and to this day I am still always outside (considering the weather isn’t freezing). Everything about nature is inspirational to me and I think that’s what gravitated me towards ceramics. There is something so sublime about taking a blob of clay and turning it into something beautiful. As for why I am getting my art teacher certification; I love little kids and I believe that art is such an important part of a child’s development.

With School aside, I love traveling, cats, books, spending time with my boyfriend and family, and cooking! I am actually in the process of writing a cookbook with my boyfriend. I don’t know if it will ever get published but the process of experimenting with foods and making up our own recipes is so much fun anyway.

Here is my instagram and twitter links. I started twitter a few weeks ago so im still trying to figure it all out(HELP!!).

How to Hang Art

After the seeing the opening tonight and taking a quick look behind the pieces to see how they are hung before anyone thought I was insane. Also, I have started to think a great deal about hanging artwork with my BFA show taking place this semester. As a result of both I started to question what is the best method for hanging artwork. Is there even a "best method" or is it a matter of preference? What other ways can artwork be hung other then with a picture hook and wire? Here is what I found while looking for some of answers.
