Real Life Ice Wonderland

"This is the magnificent outcome of a five-alarm warehouse fire in Chicago that was extinguished in freezing temperatures. Two-hundred firefighters battled the fierce fire and the water sprayed apparently froze over instantly. Real life ice wonderland!"

I wanted to share this article because these images show a design by nature, using natural elements, in a natural environment. The elements do not primarily emulate color, line, texture, form; they are fire and water under freezing temperatures. The result? A frozen sculpture of a struggle to put out a fire. This public domain changes the gallery space because it is street art, in a sense. Fire fighters took part in adding water under freezing temperatures (makes me wonder, what if painters were called plain canvas fighters, or something). Never seen anything like this before, so I was amazed.

FINAL PROJECTS

Please be prepared to present your projects to the class in approximately 5-7 minute presentations. Visuals are a must. Feel free to bring physical props and handouts if appropriate.

**You must create a POST for your final project - a link to your project, a summary, images and or videos. You will present using/from your post - this will be much easier.

ALL projects are due on the blog and resource lists and sumaries handed in to me. Print projects, papers, zines etc must be physically handed in to me.

Checklist:

-summary on the blog along with images and any videos

-link to your project (including pdf projects)

-presentations (5-7 minutes) will be from your blog post or linked directly from the post PLEASE TEST THIS BEFORE ARRIVING IN CLASS

-project summaries must be handed in to me with resource list/bibliography in addition to preparing the above for the presentations.

-I have invited guests to attend our final presentations.

Alternative Art Space

There’s a whole other art world, and an increasingly vibrant and important one, outside the mainstream art gallery and museum system.

Part one: Research alternative art spaces. Select a space that you find compelling and unique. Explain the details of this organization. How does it function? Physical space, pop up, temporary, outdoors, online? What does it focus on? Who has founded it? How does it run? Why? What kinds of art and art practice does it support and exhibit? Why does this art space exist? Does it serve a purpose outside of the mainstream institutions? Why is it important to the community it serves?

Part two: Create a short proposal to this institution. If they have instructions, follow them If not, based on your research propose a show, your own work, an event, a performance etc. to them for the coming year. Post this with your analysis of the space.

Use proper citations. ~6-8 paragraphs you must include images and links.

Institution review/analysis/reaction.

Please review each of the institutions we have visited: Newark Museum and MoMA. Address the questions we have discussed with specific examples we saw and discussed with each other and the members at each of the institutions. Use this analysis to explain how these visits have informed your experience as a member of an art audience as well as how it has informed your own art-making and exhibition. What does this analysis have you thinking about. Reference our class reading as well as other research. Use proper citations.

Please type up and bring your answers to the questions you were given along with a brief 2-3 paragraph description of your experiences at both museums: Newark Museum and MoMA. Also bring with you the reading that was due as well as some notes that pertain to the readings: passages that stuck out, questions you have and points you found relevant to the visits to the museums. After a brief discussion about these in class you will be creating a blog post assignment for 3/8.
